Cabinet Painting Questions: Cost, Oak, Durability and Time

Painting kitchen cabinets is one of the cheaper ways to change a kitchen, and it is also the paint job where prep matters most. These are the questions we hear in Salinas kitchens.

Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide for 2026. None of them is a quote from us. Monterey County wages, the paint you pick and the state of your walls will push a real price above or below these ranges. Last checked October 2026.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?

An average kitchen is published at $2,000 to $6,500 for professional cabinet painting. That works out to $30 to $70 per linear foot of cabinets. A small kitchen is listed at $1,000 to $3,500 and a large one at $5,000 to $10,000.

The number of doors and drawers, the state of the old finish and the method all move the price. Spray finishing is listed higher, at $40 to $100 per linear foot.

How much for 20 or 30 cabinet doors and drawers?

The published unit prices are $70 to $125 per door and $30 to $110 per drawer front. For 20 cabinet doors that is $1,400 to $2,500. For 30 cabinet doors it is $2,100 to $3,750. Ten drawer fronts would add $300 to $1,100.

Those sums cover doors and drawers only. The frames, end panels and any island are extra, which is why whole-kitchen figures run higher. We count every piece and price the kitchen as one job.

Is it cheaper to paint, reface or replace cabinets?

Painting is the cheapest of the three. The published national ranges are $2,000 to $6,500 to paint, $5,000 to $13,000 to reface and $4,500 to $15,000 to replace.

Refacing means new doors and drawer fronts with a veneer over the old frames. Replacing means new boxes too. Painting keeps what you have, so it only makes sense when the boxes are solid, the doors are flat and you are happy with the layout.

Painting or refinishing cabinets: what is the difference in cost?

Refinishing is listed a little lower than painting: $1,500 to $4,500 for an average kitchen against $2,000 to $6,500. Refinishing means stripping or sanding the old finish and applying new stain and clear coat, so the wood grain stays visible.

Painting covers the wood with an opaque color. Choose refinishing when the wood is attractive and you want it seen. Choose paint when you want a color, or when the wood is worn, mismatched or dated.

Are 1990s oak cabinets worth painting, and can oak go white?

Yes on both counts. Oak cabinets from the 1990s are usually solid wood frames and doors, which is a good base for paint, and they can be painted white.

Oak has deep open grain. Painted white, the grain remains visible as fine lines unless a grain filler is used first. Some people like that texture and some want a flat face. Tannin in oak can also stain through white paint, so a stain-blocking primer is needed. Many Salinas tract homes of that period have exactly these cabinets.

Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?

Laminate can be painted if it is firmly bonded and a bonding primer is used. Thermofoil is riskier. It is a thin vinyl skin over fiberboard, and when it starts to peel or bubble, paint will not hold it down.

If the thermofoil is lifting, the skin has to be removed or the doors replaced. We test adhesion on the back of a door before agreeing to paint either material.

Spray or brush for cabinets, and are doors sprayed off site?

Spraying gives cabinet doors the smoothest finish, and a careful brush and roller job on the frames can come very close. Doors and drawer fronts are taken off and sprayed flat, so the enamel levels out and does not run.

Some painters take the doors to a shop and others set up a spray area at the house. Both can work. What matters is a clean, dust-free place and enough drying time. Ask us how we would handle your kitchen.

Can cabinets be painted without removing the doors?

They can, but the result is not as good. With the doors left on, paint builds up around the hinges, edges get missed and drips form at the corners. Taking the doors off lets every edge be sanded, primed and coated properly.

We remove doors, drawers and hardware and label each piece so it returns to the same place.

How long does cabinet painting take and can I use the kitchen?

Cabinet painting takes 3 to 5 days by the published figure, and yes, you can use your kitchen for most of that time. The frames are open and the counters are covered during working hours, so plan on simple meals.

Damp weather slows the drying of enamel. In a foggy Salinas week we allow longer between coats and before rehanging the doors.

Will painted cabinets chip or peel?

Well-prepared painted cabinets do not peel, though any painted surface can chip if it is hit hard. Peeling is nearly always caused by grease left on the wood, a glossy finish that was not sanded or the wrong primer.

Chips happen most at the edges of drawers and the doors used every day. A hard enamel resists them, and small chips are easy to touch up if you keep some of the paint.

How long does cabinet paint last, compared with a factory finish?

Painted cabinets last 8 to 15 years by the published figure. A factory finish is baked or catalyzed in controlled conditions and is harder than anything applied on site, so it generally lasts longer.

A good painted finish still gives many years of normal use. Gentle cleaning, soft-close bumpers and wiping up water at the sink all extend it.

What paint do pros use on cabinets for a smooth finish?

For a smooth finish on cabinets, professionals use an enamel made for trim and cabinets, not wall paint. These are usually waterborne alkyd or urethane-modified enamels. They level out as they dry, which hides brush marks, and they cure to a hard film.

The primer matters just as much. A bonding or stain-blocking primer goes on first, and the surface is sanded between coats. We do not name a brand here. Ask us which product we would use on your cabinets and why.

I painted my cabinets myself and they look bad. Can a pro fix them?

Yes, cabinets you painted yourself can usually be put right. The fix depends on what went wrong. Brush marks and drips can be sanded flat and recoated. Paint that scratches off with a fingernail did not bond and has to be removed before starting again.

Stripping failed paint takes longer than painting bare cabinets, so the repair can cost more than a first-time job. We look at the doors and tell you which case you have.
