Oak cabinets from the 1980s and 1990s are in kitchens all over Salinas, and most are solid enough to paint. We remove the doors, degrease, sand and prime, then apply a hard cabinet enamel. Coastal damp slows drying, so we give each coat the time it needs.
Plenty of Salinas kitchens still have the cabinets the house was built with: oak in the tracts of the 1980s and 1990s, painted or stained plywood boxes in older South Salinas and Alisal homes. If the boxes are solid and you like the layout, painting them gives the room a new look without tearing out the kitchen. It suits wood and wood-veneer cabinets best. Thermofoil that is lifting or swollen particleboard near the sink does not take paint well, and we will say so.
Doors and drawer fronts come off and are numbered, and the hardware is bagged. Everything is washed with a degreaser, because kitchen grease is the main reason cabinet paint fails. Surfaces are then sanded, primed with a bonding primer and sanded again. The grain of oak can be filled if you want a smoother face. Doors are sprayed flat for an even finish, and the frames are brushed or sprayed in place with the kitchen masked off. Each piece gets two coats of cabinet enamel.
A cabinet job takes several days, because each coat has to dry before the next. Coastal damp slows drying, so on foggy weeks we allow extra time before the doors go back up. You can keep using the kitchen for simple meals while the doors are out. Enamel feels dry within hours but keeps hardening for a few weeks, so treat the doors gently at first. The written quote counts the doors, drawers and frames so there are no surprises.

Cabinet painting in Salinas: common questions
Can my honey oak cabinets be painted white?

Yes. Oak is solid wood and holds paint well. Its open grain will still show faintly through the paint unless it is filled first. We can show you both looks so you can choose before we start.
Will the paint stick near the stove and sink?
It will if the prep is right. We degrease those areas with extra care, sand and use a bonding primer. A hard cabinet enamel then stands up to wiping. Standing water on a door edge should still be dried off.
Do you take the doors away to paint them?
Doors and drawer fronts are removed so they can be finished flat, which gives a smoother result. Whether they are finished at your home or elsewhere depends on the job and the space. We explain the plan in the quote.
