How Long Does Painting Take, and How Long Does It Last?

How long interior and exterior painting takes in Salinas, CA, drying and curing times, when rooms can be used again and how long paint lasts.

How Long Does Painting Take, and How Long Does It Last?

Two questions come up on every job: how long will it take, and how long will it last. Salinas weather affects both, since damp air slows drying and moisture shortens the life of exterior paint.

Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide for 2026. None of them is a quote from us. Monterey County wages, the paint you pick and the state of your walls will push a real price above or below these ranges. Last checked October 2026.

How long does it take to paint a house inside?

Most interior rooms take us 1 to 2 days. How long it takes to paint a whole house inside depends on its size, how much repair the walls need and whether ceilings and trim are included, and we give the number of days with the quote.

As a guide to the painting itself, HomeGuide lists 4 to 5 hours for a bedroom and 5 to 7 hours for a living room, with 1 to 2 hours more for trim. Prep, drying time and second coats come on top.

How long does it take to paint the exterior?

A full exterior usually takes us 3 to 5 days, depending on the weather. HomeGuide gives a similar national figure of 4 to 5 days for an average job.

In Salinas the working day outside is shorter than it looks. Walls are often wet with fog until mid-morning and the damp returns in the evening, so painting happens in the hours between. Heavy scraping, wood repair or two stories add days.

How long should I wait between coats?

Most acrylic wall paints need about 2 to 4 hours between coats, and the label on the can gives the exact time. Enamels for trim and cabinets need longer, often overnight.

Those times assume mild, dry air. On a cool foggy day here, paint stays wet longer and the wait between coats should be extended. Recoating too early can cause wrinkling and poor adhesion.

How long before furniture can go back?

You can put the furniture back the day after painting in most cases. The paint is dry to the touch within hours, but it is still soft.

Keep furniture an inch or two off the walls for the first couple of weeks, and wait before hanging pictures or pushing anything hard against the fresh paint.

How soon can I shower after the bathroom is painted?

Wait at least 24 hours before you shower in a newly painted bathroom, and longer if you can. Steam on paint that has not set can cause streaks, surfactant stains and blisters.

When you do start using the shower, run the fan and leave the door open afterward. In our damp climate a couple of days is the safer wait.

How long before I can wash or scrub new paint?

Wait until the paint has cured, which takes about 2 to 4 weeks for most acrylic paints. Dry and cured are different. Dry means it will not come off on your finger. Cured means it has reached full hardness.

Before then, wipe marks gently with a soft damp cloth and no cleaner. Scrubbing early can leave shiny patches.

Can I stay in the house while it is painted?

Yes, you can stay in your house during nearly all paint jobs. Interior work is done room by room so that bedrooms and the kitchen stay available. Modern low-odor paints make this much easier than it used to be.

People with breathing problems, pregnant women and babies may be more comfortable elsewhere while the work is under way. On a pre-1978 house where old paint is being disturbed, keep children and pets out of the work area until cleanup is complete.

How long does interior paint last?

There is no published figure for how long interior paint lasts, because it depends on the room. HomeGuide says paint in general is redone every 5 to 10 years.

Ceilings and adult bedrooms can go much longer. Hallways, children's rooms, kitchens and bathrooms wear fastest. Good paint in a washable sheen stretches the time between repaints.

How long does exterior paint last?

Exterior paint lasts 5 to 10 years on average by the national figures, with a full range of 3 to 20 years. By surface, the published figures are 5 to 7 years on stucco, 3 to 7 years on wood siding and 10 to 15 years on fiber cement board.

In Salinas the wall that fails first is usually the one that stays damp or takes the wind. Trim and fascia wear out before the stucco. Near the bay, salt shortens the life. In the south valley, sun does.

How often should I repaint the outside of the house?

How often you should repaint depends on the surface, so go by condition and not by the calendar. The national guide is every 5 to 10 years. Look at the house each spring.

  • Chalk that comes off on your hand.
  • Cracked or missing caulk around windows and trim.
  • Peeling on sills, fascia ends and lower boards.
  • Fading on the south and west walls.
  • Hairline cracks in stucco that have opened up.

Repainting when these first appear costs less than waiting until the wood or stucco is damaged.
