Across the country, a full interior repaint is published at $3,500 to $10,000 for 2026. We do not print a Salinas price list. A newer North Salinas home with clean textured drywall and a plaster-walled house near Oldtown can have the same floor area and need very different amounts of work.
Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide for 2026. None of them is a quote from us. Monterey County wages, the paint you pick and the state of your walls will push a real price above or below these ranges. Last checked October 2026.
How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?
The published national range is $3,500 to $10,000 for the whole interior. HomeGuide gives $7,500 as the average, $2,000 as the minimum and $15,000 as the maximum. Per square foot of wall and ceiling actually painted, that is $1 to $3.
What a Salinas job costs comes down to five things: how much repair the walls need, whether ceilings are included, how much trim there is, how high the rooms are and how many colors are used. We check all five on a visit before we write a number.
How much does it cost to paint a room?
A single room is published at $300 to $1,000, with $750 as the national average. By type of room, the same source lists the ranges below.
| Room | Published national range |
|---|---|
| Small bathroom | $150 to $400 |
| Kitchen walls | $150 to $250 |
| Bedroom | $350 to $850 |
| Primary bedroom | $650 to $1,400 |
| Dining room or hallway | $300 to $1,000 |
| Living room | $600 to $2,000 |
There is also a minimum fee for sending a painter out, listed at $250 to $500 or more. That is why one bathroom booked alone costs more for its size than the same bathroom done with the rest of the house.
How much to paint a 1,500 or 2,000 square foot house inside?
For a 1,500 square foot house the interior page of HomeGuide lists $4,500 to $6,000. For a 2,000 square foot house it lists $6,000 to $8,000. Both figures go by floor area and cover the whole interior.
The same table gives $3,000 to $4,000 for 1,000 square feet and $7,500 to $10,000 for 2,500. Many single-story homes in South Salinas and the Alisal are at the smaller end, and two-story homes in Creekbridge and Harden Ranch are at the larger end. Floor area alone is only a starting point.
How much to paint a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house?
For the interior of a 3-bedroom house the published national range is $1,200 to $8,500. The low figure assumes walls only in good condition. The high figure assumes ceilings, trim and doors as well.
A second way to look at it is to add up rooms from the published list. Three bedrooms at $350 to $850 each come to $1,050 to $2,550. Two bathrooms at $150 to $400 each come to $300 to $800. Together that is $1,350 to $3,350 before the living room, kitchen and hall. Treat the sum as a rough check, not a price.
How much do painters charge per square foot?
Nationally, painters charge $1 to $3 for each square foot of surface they paint. If the price is worked out from the floor area of the house, the published figure is $3 to $7 per square foot. A quote should say which measure it uses, because the two are easy to confuse.
For walls only, the listed figure is $1.00 to $2.00 per square foot of wall. The same source says labor makes up 70% to 85% of an interior job, so time spent on prep counts for more than the cost of the paint.
Do painters charge by the room or by the square foot?
Painters use both methods. One or two rooms are normally priced by the room. A whole house is more often priced from measured wall area or from the hours and materials expected. Either is fine if the quote spells out the rooms, the surfaces, the coats and the prep.
We give one written price for the whole job after we have seen it, with the included work listed.
Does it cost more to paint ceilings as well as walls?
Yes, ceilings add to the cost. The published figure is $1.00 to $2.00 more per square foot of ceiling. By room, a bedroom ceiling is listed at $150 to $300 and a kitchen ceiling at $100 to $500.
Sprayed acoustic texture, which many Salinas homes from the 1950s to the 1980s still have, drinks paint and has to be handled gently. If a flat white ceiling is clean and you are keeping the color, it may not need painting at all. We say so when that is the case.
How much extra for trim, doors and baseboards?
Baseboards and other interior trim are listed at $1 to $4 per linear foot, which is $500 to $2,000 for a typical house. One room of baseboards is $25 to $200, and an interior door is $75 to $150.
Trim is slow work. It is done by brush in an enamel, and old trim must be sanded and sometimes stripped of drips and chips first. The older homes in Maple Park and near Central Avenue have wide casings, picture rails and paneled doors. A plain tract house has much less.
How much extra for high or vaulted ceilings and stairwells?
Rooms with ceilings over 10 feet cost 10% to 50% or more above a standard room, according to the published figure. There is no dollar amount, since the height and the access differ from house to house.
Vaulted ceilings and open stairwells are common in two-story homes built in North Salinas and Las Palmas Ranch since the 1980s. The extra cost is for tall ladders, planks or staging and the time to set them up safely. We check this at the estimate.
Does it cost more to go from a dark color to white?
In most cases yes. White over a dark color rarely hides in two coats, so the job needs a coat of primer or a third coat of paint. HomeGuide publishes no price for this. It only notes that a big color change can add coats, materials and labor.
The same applies in reverse. Deep blues, reds and greens over a pale wall often need more coats to look even. Tell us the present color and the new one, and the quote will include what is needed.
How much more if the walls need a lot of prep?
A lot of prep can add a good deal, because prep is labor. HomeGuide lists sanding and patching at $1 to $3 per square foot of wall treated, and drywall texture at $0.80 to $2.00 per square foot.
In Salinas the common extras are cracks at door and window corners, water stains below windows, dents and holes in rentals, and mildew in bathrooms. We list repairs as their own line so you can see what the wall work costs.
Does the price include moving furniture and covering floors?
It should, and the quote should say so. With us, moving furniture to the center of the room, covering it and protecting the floors is part of the job. We ask you to put away small items, pictures and anything breakable.
Some painters charge for it separately. The published national rate for moving furniture is $35 to $60 per hour. A room that is already empty takes less time to paint, so tell us if the house will be vacant.
Why are my painting quotes so far apart?
Quotes end up far apart when they are not for the same work. One painter may allow for full wall repair, primer and two coats on walls, ceilings and trim. Another may have priced one coat on the walls and nothing else.
- Check which surfaces each quote covers.
- Check the number of coats and whether primer is included.
- Check how repairs are handled and priced.
- Check the grade of paint named.
- Check that the business is licensed and insured, since that is part of the cost of doing the job properly.
How do I know if a painting quote is fair?
A painting quote is fair when it is detailed, close to other detailed quotes for the same scope and comes from a licensed contractor. Detail is the best sign. A fair quote names each room, the prep, the coats, the paint and the payment terms.
Be wary of a price far under the rest. The saving usually comes out of the prep, which is the part that makes paint last. You can also compare the total with the national ranges above as a loose check.
