Stucco and wood siding cover most houses in Salinas. Stucco is the wall of the tract homes in North Salinas, Creekbridge and Harden Ranch. Wood lap siding and plywood panels are found on older homes near Oldtown, in Maple Park, South Salinas and the Alisal. Vinyl, aluminum and full brick walls are uncommon, but the questions still come up.
Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide for 2026. None of them is a quote from us. Monterey County wages, the paint you pick and the state of your walls will push a real price above or below these ranges. Last checked October 2026.
Can you paint stucco, and what paint sticks to it?
Yes, you can paint stucco, and a 100% acrylic masonry or exterior paint sticks to it well. Stucco must be clean, dry and free of chalk first. New stucco has to cure before it is painted, and bare or patched areas need a masonry primer.
Acrylic paint lets moisture vapor pass through, which stucco needs. Elastomeric coatings are thicker and stretch over small cracks. They suit walls with a lot of hairline cracking but must go on at the right thickness over sound stucco. HomeGuide lists stucco painting at $1.00 to $5.50 per square foot.
Do hairline cracks in stucco need fixing first?
Yes. Hairline cracks should be filled or bridged before painting, because they let water into the wall. Very fine ones can be covered by a brush-grade elastomeric patch or a high-build coating. Wider cracks are opened, filled with a flexible sealant and textured to blend in.
Hairline cracks are normal in Salinas stucco. They come from shrinkage, small earthquakes and soil movement. A crack that is wide, growing or stepped can point to a structural issue, and someone qualified should look at that before it is painted.
How often does stucco need painting?
Paint on stucco lasts 5 to 7 years by the published national figure, so that is roughly how often stucco needs painting. In practice a good acrylic on sound stucco in our mild climate can go longer.
Repaint when the color has faded, the surface chalks onto your hand or cracks have opened. Walls facing the afternoon wind and sun wear first, and dust staining may make a wall look tired before the paint has failed.
What paint is best on wood siding, and will paint fix dry cracked wood?
The best system for wood siding is an exterior wood primer on bare areas followed by two coats of 100% acrylic paint. Acrylic stays flexible as the boards swell in fog and shrink in sun.
Paint will not fix dry cracked wood. It fills hairline surface checks and slows further drying. Boards that are split, cupped or soft have to be repaired or replaced. Plywood panel siding needs its grooves and bottom edges sealed, since that is where it takes in water. The published national figure for painting wood siding is $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot.
How much does it cost to paint a cedar shingle house?
No separate national figure is published for cedar shingles. The nearest is the wood siding rate of $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot. Shingles are at the upper end of the work, because their rough faces and many edges soak up material and need brushing.
Shingled houses are rare in Salinas and much more common in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pacific Grove. Many are stained, not painted, since stain soaks in and does not peel. We look at the old finish before advising which to use.
Can you paint vinyl siding?
Yes, you can paint vinyl siding if it is in good condition. It has to be washed well, and it is painted with an acrylic paint labeled as safe for vinyl. HomeGuide lists the cost at $1 to $3 per square foot.
Vinyl siding is unusual on Salinas houses, though it appears on some mobile homes and additions.
Can vinyl siding be painted a darker color, or will it warp?
It can warp. A darker color absorbs more heat than the siding was made for, and the panels can buckle. The safe rule is to stay the same shade or lighter, or to use a paint line made with heat-reflecting pigments that the maker approves for vinyl.
Our cool coastal weather lowers the risk compared with a hot inland town, but it does not remove it on a wall in full afternoon sun.
Does painting vinyl siding void the warranty?
It may. Some vinyl siding makers state that painting voids the warranty or limits it, and others allow certain colors. The answer is in your own warranty document.
Read it or contact the maker before painting. On older siding the warranty may have run out already, and then the question no longer matters.
Can you paint aluminum siding?
Yes. Aluminum siding takes paint well. The chalky residue of the old finish is washed off, bare metal is primed and the siding is finished with acrylic paint. HomeGuide lists the cost at $1 to $4 per square foot and the life of the paint at 5 to 10 years.
Dents cannot be fixed with paint, and oxidized spots need the right primer. As with vinyl, there is little aluminum siding in Salinas.
Is painting brick a bad idea, and does it trap moisture?
Painting brick is not always a bad idea, but it is a one-way decision and it can trap moisture. Brick absorbs and releases water. A coating that does not breathe can hold that moisture in, and the paint then blisters or the face of the brick flakes.
If brick is to be painted, it must be dry and sound, and the product must be a breathable masonry paint, limewash or mineral coating. Once painted, brick has to be maintained as a painted surface from then on. HomeGuide lists brick painting at $1.50 to $4.50 per square foot.
Should I paint my brick or leave it natural?
Leave it natural if the brick is in good condition and you like the color. Unpainted brick needs almost no upkeep. Paint your brick only if it is already painted, badly stained, patched with mismatched brick or truly spoils the look of the house.
In Salinas, brick is mostly found on chimneys, planters and low front walls. A limewash or masonry stain changes the color while letting the brick breathe, and is worth considering before paint.
